Charlotte’s Bedroom: A Work in Progress
I’ve been pulling together items for Charlotte’s bedroom for the past three years, and it's really starting to feel cohesive. Below are most of the items I’ve already purchased, with the rug being an especially big hit. While it may look like I have a deal with West Elm, I don’t—I just genuinely love their products and have purchased everything myself over time.
Initially, I had a different vision for Charlotte's room. However, as she’s grown and expressed her preferences, I’ve adapted the design and color palette to better match her love for pinks, yellows, and oranges, inspired by the Pieced Circle Rug. My ultimate goal is to create a space she absolutely loves.
Although we’ve accomplished a lot, Charlotte’s bedroom is still a work in progress. I still need to hang the art and complete a few other tasks, but she’s moved in and thriving in the space. It’s been a fun project, but I can’t wait to wrap it up.
Originally, we used this room as our bedroom until we moved downstairs. The original floors were not in the best shape, so we decided to lay laminate flooring over the existing wood to quickly create a livable space for Charlotte. In the future, the laminate can be easily taken up and the original floors can be repaired and refinished. The walls had old wood paneling covered in wallpaper, which we removed, revealing plaster that was in decent shape but needed more attention than we could give. We opted to cover the walls and ceiling with a thin 1/4 inch layer of gypsum board, encapsulating the original materials for future restoration.
We also built shelving in Charlotte’s closet using IKEA Billy bookcases and created a little platform with a cushion for her. Eventually, I’d like to paint it darker, add some lighting, and install a small shelf for books, making it a cozy nook for her.
I’m hopeful we can fully complete Charlotte’s room by the end of the year, but for now, it’s functional, looks great, and she loves it—and that’s what matters most. The rest can come later.
